Sober Social Activities

One of our favorite sayings in the big book of Alcoholics Anonymous is that we “absolutely insist on enjoying life.” We did not work so hard at being clean and sober to lead glum and boring lives. That is why we believe it is very important to participate in pro-social activities with other people who are recovering. We partner with several other local agencies including Colorado Access to Recovery ATR to provide a sober-social activity at least once per month.

Some activities we have provided in the recent past include:

January 2013 Comedy Night

Earlier this year, we collaborated with ATR to take our clients to a terrific comedy event with comedian Mark Lundholm, who has earned international fame with his personal and irreverent comedic style. From world-renowned musicians, heads of state, fortune 500 companies to rehabilitation centers and convicted felons, Mark has entertained on the world's stage, and 20 Alano House clients got to see him in person right here in Colorado Springs. It was a blast for all involved! If you want to find out more about him or where he'll be next, visit www.marklundholm.com.

Paint the Town

For the last couple of years, Alano House clients have the opportunity to spend a night out "painting the town" - in oil, of course! In a private, clients-only session, Alano House paints, colors, smears, dabs, and brushes color on canvas in order to take home a one-of-a-kind personal paint projects. Thanks to www.paint-the-town.com for hosting the parties for us! Photos of the latest fun-filled evening are available at this link on Facebook.

Whitewater Rafting and Camping Trips

Each July we partner with ATR and Independent Whitewater to provide a world-class whitewater rafting experience for our clients. We spend a weekend in rugged Chaffee County, Colorado and raft the Brown’s Canyon and Royal Gorge sections of the Arkansas River. Some other activities we participate in during this weekend include fishing, hiking, and 12-step meetings around a campfire. If you have never been whitewater rafting in Colorado then you are definitely missing out!

Skiing/Snowboarding Trip

Each winter we partner with ATR and the friendly folks at Monarch Mountain for at least one skiing/snowboarding trip. Standing atop the continental divide on a pair of skis will certainly leave you wondering why you waited so long to get sober.

AA State Convention

Our program is based on the 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous, and each year around Labor Day weekend we travel with our clients to attend the annual AA Colorado State Convention. In 2011 the convention was held in beautiful Loveland, Colorado, and in 2012, right here in Colorado Springs! Our clients were able to interact with other men and women in recovery and learn that sobriety can be FUN!

Alano House's recovery program is based on the 12-steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.

In between these large events we routinely go on many smaller ones, such as Colorado College hockey games, Colorado Springs Sky Sox baseball games, trips to Elitch Gardens, bowling, and local AA and NA functions. Come join us as we prove that every activity you thought you were enjoying while drunk and high is way more fun when you are clean and sober!
